A South Carolina bicyclist was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Charleston on the night of Feb. 26. Authorities said the accident happened on Stono Bridge.
Charleston police said they responded to a report of a hit-and-run on the bridge just before 10 p.m. The victim, a 30-year-old man, died from blunt force trauma. While investigating the crash, a man arrived at the scene to tell them the suspect, who is his friend, had fled the scene and came to his house. Police went to the man’s residence and took the suspect, a 29-year-old man, into custody.
The defendant was charged with reckless homicide, felony DUI and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death. He was booked into the Charleston County Detention Center at 3:01 a.m. on Feb. 27. His bond was later set at $100,000. The crash was the second fatal hit-and-run accident involving a bicyclist in Charleston within a 24 hour period. Authorities said a 46-year-old Goose Creek man was struck by and killed near Cosgrove Avenue and Azalea Drive around 11 p.m. on Feb. 25. The suspect has not yet been identified.
