A 24-year-old South Carolina man is facing a felony DUI resulting in death charge, and authorities say he will be charged with several more counts following the Nov. 8 fatal accident. The man, an Anderson University assistant baseball coach, was driving his Ford pickup on Williamston Road in front of the university’s new dormitory when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Nissan Altima.
Several people were involved in the crash. Two people, the Nissan driver and a teenager, were declared dead at the scene. A 20-year-old woman was transported to a local hospital after she was extricated from one of the cars, but she later died from her injuries. Two minors were also hospitalized, and one is said to be in critical condition. A 28-year-old male passenger in the truck was also reported to be in critical condition.
In a case like this one, even though an individual may be facing DUI charges, they may not have been driving under the influence. An individual’s breath test might be incorrect, or he or she may suffer from a medical condition that makes him or her appear intoxicated. An attorney might be able to examine some of these possibilities as part of the defense.
An attorney might also work out a plea deal with the prosecutor in a similar case. Pleading guilty might lead to fewer penalties. In some cases, a defendant’s attorney might try to show that his or her client has stopped drinking and has taken other steps to ensure that he or she does not offend again.
