A 34-year-old South Carolina man is facing multiple serious charges after leading Charleston County deputies on a chase that caused the death of another driver. The charges include drunk driving, hit and run and failure to stop at an accident scene with injuries. According to court documents, driving on a suspended license and drug possession were also included in the charges.

According to a deputy supervisor of Charleston County, he noticed a pickup truck driver intentionally ramming a vehicle at about 6 p.m. on a recent Saturday. When the man left the scene, the officer tried to stop him, but the driver allegedly ignored the siren and blue lights. During the pursuit, the pickup truck driver smashed into two vehicles in an intersection before he fled on foot.

He was soon apprehended in the parking lot of a grocery store. The 59-year-old driver of one of the vehicles that this man allegedly struck suffered critical injuries and later died at the hospital. The passenger in the car of the suspect also suffered injuries and was treated at a hospital in the area. The suspect is being held on a bond of more than $3 million in a county detention center.

Facing drunk driving charges in South Carolina is serious, and defending such charges may be best done by an experienced criminal defense attorney. Although any accused person will remain innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, a lawyer can protect the individual’s rights throughout the proceedings and provide valuable guidance and advice during negotiations if applicable. If no plea deal is offered, an attorney can present a strong defense during the trial in an effort to obtain the best possible outcome.
