On June 18 around 12:25 a.m., there was a shooting in South Carolina that injured several people. A 17-year-old man was charged with seven counts of attempted murder in the Myrtle Beach shooting not long afterward. He also faces one charge of carjacking. A 18-year-old man was taken into custody the following month in connection with the shooting and charged with six counts of attempted murder. Both were from North Carolina.
Two teenage brothers from North Carolina, ages 18 and 19, were also charged with six counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident. The 18-year-old was taken into custody on June 30. His brother turned himself in nearly two weeks later. The two were extradited to South Carolina.
The judge said that since they were from out of state, they were also a flight risk and denied them bond. Their parents argued that they were not, but the judge said that given the seriousness of the incident, he would still deny bond.
People who are facing charges for these types of violent crimes might be concerned about their defense. With an attorney, they may be able to work out a strategy. A person might choose to accept a plea deal involving a lighter sentence in exchange for pleading guilty, but there may be other options as well. Depending on the quality of the evidence, the person might want to plead not guilty and go to trial. Some evidence could have been gathered illegally, and if this is the case, it could be deemed inadmissible.
