Police in South Carolina have reported that a 22-year-old man accused of fleeing a check point during the early morning hours of April 28 has been charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. A background check is said to have revealed that the man has a raft of prior criminal convictions on charges including gun possession and breaking into vehicles.
South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers say that the man fled in his vehicle from a check point they were conducting at the intersection of Burdell Road and Dupont Boulevard in Lugoff when he was questioned about the odor of marijuana allegedly coming from his vehicle. However, reports suggest that the vehicle pursuit was a short one. Police say that the man lost control of his vehicle outside a nearby apartment building. He is then alleged to have attempted to flee the scene on foot.
Reports indicate that the man was apprehended a short time later by deputies from the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office after a K9 unit was called in to assist the deputies and troopers searching for him. After being taken into custody, the man was transported to the Kershaw County Detention Center for processing.
The urge to flee can be strong when the future provides little to be optimistic about, but those who attempt to elude law enforcement rarely avoid capture for long. Experienced criminal defense attorneys may seek to have drug crime charges reduced during plea negotiations even when the evidence against their clients is convincing, and prosecutors could agree to be lenient to avoid burdening a congested criminal justice system still further and save taxpayers the cost of a trial.
