A 50-year-old Williamston man was the only person injured in a wrong-way collision on March 3. The accident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. in Greer on I-85 as he struck a southbound tractor trailer while driving north in the southbound lane. The southbound lanes were closed for approximately one hour because of the accident.

The chief of staff for South Carolina's lieutenant governor was arrested and charged with DUI on Jan. 31. Columbia Police said they pulled over the staffer around 12:41 a.m.

The assistant principal at a South Carolina high school is facing DUI charges after she was stopped by authorities on Dec. 20, according to reports. Witnesses claim that they found the woman passed out in her SUV in a Summerville bar parking lot, and they say that she drove away when they woke her. A police officer who arrived on the scene said she was unable to catch up with the woman at the time.

South Carolina assistant coach charged with DUI after fatal crash

A 24-year-old South Carolina man is facing a felony DUI resulting in death charge, and authorities say he will be charged with several more counts following the Nov. 8 fatal accident. The man, an Anderson University assistant baseball coach, was driving his Ford pickup on Williamston Road in front of the university's new dormitory when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Nissan Altima.

South Carolina legislator has DUI charge dropped

A May 2013 drunk driving charge against a South Carolina legislator was dismissed by a judge during a hearing on Oct. 29. According to reports, the judge decided to drop the charge because police did not read him his rights on camera as is required under state law. However, the legislator is still facing drunk driving and weapons charges from 2012.

Man charged for felony DUI after fatal crash

A 52-year-old man in South Carolina is facing felony DUI charges as a result of a fatal car crash that happened in Seneca on Sept. 6. The crash involved five cars and a total of seven people. A married couple was killed in the accident, and four other people were injured.

Bond determined for South Carolina woman in DUI accident

A 45-year-old Manning woman's bond has been set at $60,000 in connection with an Aug. 30 accident. The woman faces felony DUI charges in connection with the incident, which occurred as she reportedly drove east on SC 261 late at night. According to reports, the woman struck the rear of another vehicle that was moving in the same direction. The other vehicle then left the road and struck a tree.

South Carolina DUI incident involves business CEO

The leader of a failed organic farming business has been held on DUI charges after authorities reportedly discovered an open alcohol container in his vehicle on July 11 during a stop on Highway 18. Details related to the DUI incident are limited, but the man is expected to be held until extradition to Tennessee can occur. At the time of the DUI detention, it was discovered that a Tennessee warrant was active in connection with the man's reported failure to attend a court session related to a forgery case in that state.

The seriousness of a DUI cannot be overstated. People caught driving under the influence are subject to some of the harshest penalties the legal system can dole out. If someone is injured or killed in the process, the punishment will be harsher still.

Tough new and current DUI laws for South Carolina

Despite tough DUI laws, a study by 24-7 Wall Street has named South Carolina as third in the nation for drunk driving deaths. In 2012 alone, almost 360 people were killed in drunk driving incidents. Although the state is third in deaths, it is ranked in 20th place for DUI arrests. Recently, Governor Nikki Haley signed into a law what is being called Emma's Law, which requires an ignition interlock be installed on the vehicles of those first and second time convicted with blood-alcohol contents of 0.15 or higher and 0.08 percent, respectively.
