Man charged with DUI after allegedly hitting mailboxes

A South Carolina man faces numerous charges after an alleged drunk driving incident on Nov. 30. According to authorities, a police officer noticed the 43-year-old accused man crossing the center line of a road in Kershaw County. Police say they then tried to stop the man, but he allegedly refused to comply with their request, initiating a chase through several residential areas.

Former CCU quarterback facing DUI charge

A South Carolina football player was accused of driving drunk after police allegedly found him sleeping in a drive-thru on Nov. 23. Police say Tyler Thigpen, a former quarterback for the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers, was found asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle while parked in the drive-thru of a Wendy's restaurant in Myrtle Beach. He was ultimately charged for DUI.

What field sobriety tests are most commonly used?

South Carolina drivers should be aware that they run the risk of being pulled over if they make the decision to drink and drive. In many cases, they may face certain tests that are conducted by officers to determine if they may be too impaired to drive. There are three main tests that authorities use to determine if someone may be under the influence of alcohol: the horizontal gaze nystagmus, or HGN, the walk-and-turn and the one-leg stand.

South Carolina assistant coach charged with DUI after fatal crash

A 24-year-old South Carolina man is facing a felony DUI resulting in death charge, and authorities say he will be charged with several more counts following the Nov. 8 fatal accident. The man, an Anderson University assistant baseball coach, was driving his Ford pickup on Williamston Road in front of the university's new dormitory when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Nissan Altima.

South Carolina legislator has DUI charge dropped

A May 2013 drunk driving charge against a South Carolina legislator was dismissed by a judge during a hearing on Oct. 29. According to reports, the judge decided to drop the charge because police did not read him his rights on camera as is required under state law. However, the legislator is still facing drunk driving and weapons charges from 2012.

South Carolina high school teacher charged with DUI

The South Carolina Highway Patrol claims that a Spartanburg County high school teacher and athletic coach was under the influence of alcohol when she drove seven students to a track meet on Sept. 26. The 42-year-old woman has been charged with child endangerment and DUI. The incident occurred on Interstate 26 in North Charleston.

South Carolina law creates stiffer DUI penalties

As Emma's Law went into effect on Oct. 1, the penalties for driving while intoxicated became more stringent in the state. The law is named for a girl who died on Jan. 1, 2012, in a DUI accident. One of the important aspects of the legislation is the fact that it draws attention to and raises awareness of the consequences of intoxicated driving. Additionally, the law establishes tools that the authorities can use to address the actions of those who choose to drive while they are drunk.

Man charged for felony DUI after fatal crash

A 52-year-old man in South Carolina is facing felony DUI charges as a result of a fatal car crash that happened in Seneca on Sept. 6. The crash involved five cars and a total of seven people. A married couple was killed in the accident, and four other people were injured.

Bond determined for South Carolina woman in DUI accident

A 45-year-old Manning woman's bond has been set at $60,000 in connection with an Aug. 30 accident. The woman faces felony DUI charges in connection with the incident, which occurred as she reportedly drove east on SC 261 late at night. According to reports, the woman struck the rear of another vehicle that was moving in the same direction. The other vehicle then left the road and struck a tree.
