South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the 45-year-old driver of a pickup truck allegedly turned the wrong way into a road in Beaufort, traveling against the flow of traffic. This apparently happened shortly after midnight on a recent Sunday morning. The pickup truck smashed head-on into a sedan that was occupied by a 24-year-old musician who was traveling home after a performance.
The drivers of both vehicles and a 47-year-old passenger in the truck had to be extricated from the badly damaged vehicles. The musician did not survive the blunt force trauma he suffered, and he was declared dead at the accident scene. The pickup truck driver and her passenger were transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were reported to be non-life-threatening.
Reportedly, the South Carolina driver was booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center and is facing felony DUI charges. No indication of her blood alcohol content was published, but her attorney will likely scrutinize the procedures used to determine her level of intoxication. Any person accused of driving under the influence may challenge evidence that is presented by the prosecution.
